A little bird showed me

Learning from the garden birds

There are several references in Scripture about praying constantly, and so forth, and we wonder how we can do that and get on with everyday tasks at the same time.

Looking out of the window

I was watching a little flock of a dozen or so small birds. This group of garden feeders had come to snack in a tall bush by my bedroom window once. Although they had found a good place to alight to feed they never once focused all of their attention on what they were doing but constantly looked around to check there was no danger.

I thought about this spectacle. There birds were doing something important—feeding—yet they never forgot the other important thing that they needed to be doing at the same time. A good job because their very lives depended on it.

God calls us to do many important things and we busy ourselves about these and many more besides. But we must be so careful, like these birds. We must be sure that our attention does not get so caught up in these things—even these necessary things—that we stop doing our other important business which is prayer.

There are several references in Scripture about praying constantly, and so forth, and we wonder how we can do that and get on with everyday tasks at the same time. But these birds show us how. They have to look for danger constantly but they get on with feeding, bringing up young, washing and drinking etc. all at the same time. So must we.

Today make a new commitment to “pray continually” as the Bible exhorts us to do in 1 Thessalonians ch5 v17 and “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians ch4 v2
